Due to a conflicting event, the match has been put back to 2.30pm (meet at 2pm)

Venue: Croft Sport Centre
Marlborough Lane, Old Town, Swindon SN3 1RA

Highworth 0 - 2 Wasps

Another good result today with a repeat 2-0 win at Highworth in the cold. A long range goal from Tom H and a well taken goal from Johan after a neat pass from Arthur made it 6 points from 2 games. Good defensive play and goalkeeping means another clean sheet.

Captain: James. Coaches' MoM: Tom H for a super goal and good passing.

Good points: some lovely passes (even if some of them didn't quite come off!), making better use of the sloping pitch than last week. Everyone is marking well.

Learning points: play until the ball is dead - everyone must keep playing until the ball is securely in the goalie's hands or the referee has given a corner or throw-in.

Sunday, 14 December 2008

Wasps 2 - 0 Highworth

Well done today - a good win on a sloping pitch with a couple of boys missing through illness. Thanks to Jonathan for stepping in and for Martin for refereeing at short notice. After a frustrating first half where nothing quite worked, it came together in the second half when the passing starting to work resulting in Johan and Jonathan picking up goals. Tom H was unlucky a couple of times against an excellent Highworth goalie. We defended well, especially against several close-range free-kicks.

Captains MoM: Ewan for a clean sheet. Coaches MoM: Samuel for a very solid performance in defence

Good points - raising the game in the second half, trying to keep the passing game going.

Learning points - taking advantage of the slope, controlling the ball and passing confidently into space.

Last two matches of 2008

We have two matches before Christmas, both v Highworth. Subject to availability, everyone will play in at least one of the games. Highworth are currently bottom of the league with 2 points, but they do score a few goals. We hope to win both games if we perform as we have recently.

The Wanborough school pitch is wet and is being repaired over the holidays, so we have arranged to play both games away at Highworth.

Marlborough 3 -3 Wanborough

Another score draw against Marlborough. Goals from Tom H (2) and Johan could have won the match, but Marlborough came back from 1-3 down to draw 3-3. Well done to everyone playing in tough wintry conditions.

Coaches MoM: Johan. Captain's MoM: Jonathan.

Good points: scoring 3 goals away.
Learning points: defence - we must learn to defend a lead.

Monday, 24 November 2008

U10s Sun 30 Nov and Sun 7 Dec

Info below about upcoming matches, as usual please let us know if you are unavailable. Hopefully everyone is over the cold bugs, but I've named a first reserve for each match who may need to be called up in case of illness etc.

Could everyone check their boots before every match - studs should be securely screwed in and no sharp edges. Referees are starting to check such things and we want to avoid injury. Boots should be clean at the start of the match - parents, make the boys learn to clean their own boots after every match!!

Team: Ewan (GK), Shay (capt), Arthur, Harry, Dominic, Jay, James, Tom H
No match Sunday 23rd.

Result Wasps 7 - 1 Cirencester. Well done to everyone, and thanks to those who stepped in to cover illness. Goals from Samuel (3), James (2), Shay and George. Good points: good passing leading to lots of chances, strong tackling and blocking the ball, playing out of position. Learning points: failure to mark a throw in leading to the goal.

Sunday, 16 November 2008

Wasps 1 - 3 Robins

Another great performance today (again!), we had lots of chances and most of the play. A couple of lucky breaks let Robins score 3 goals - we need to be just as good at taking our chances. Wasps' goal was another great passing goal. Three passes from a free-kick and the ball was in the net. We showed lots of determination to score at 2-1 down.

We have an developing reputation in our League for playing an effective passing game. Robin's manager congratulated Wasps on how well you pass the ball. Keep it up!

Good points: determination in last 15 minutes, passing well.
Learning points: being more alert to danger like substitutions and specialist throw-in takers, not being scared of being hit by the ball.
There is no longer any excuse for any player doing a foul throw-in!

MoM: captain's - Johan for passing and finding space (created the goal), coaches' - Samuel - another strong and brave midfield performance.

Please let me know if you can't make either match

No match Sunday 23rd currently.

Sunday, 9 November 2008

Shaw 3 - 1 Wasps

Another great performance today, despite the score. Everyone worked hard on a muddy pitch in cold driving rain. Our goal was the best of the season, straight from the training ground: Johan set up to shoot from a free-kick, but slid the ball past the wall to Sam who shot, and Jonathan pounced for the goal. At one point it looked like we might draw 2-2, but we couldn't quite finish and they scored on the break.

Good points: working hard and challenging for the ball, looking for passes, creating lots of chances.
Things to work on: looking up before shooting, taking control rather than watching the ball, not giving away possession from the kick-off!

MoM: Captain's - Jonathan, lots of effort resulting in a goal. Coach's - Charlie, strong defending and attacking play, excellent throw-ins!

Wednesday, 5 November 2008

couple of weeks (hopefully avoiding Sat am)

Sunday, 2 November 2008

Wasps 3 - 0 Ferndale

Another great performance today gave us our second win of the season and moved us into 6th place in the league table. On a very wet and muddy pitch everyone worked hard and tried to play proper football despite the conditions. We created a lot of chances Johan scored direct from a freekick, Tom H scored his seventh goal and Ferndale conceded an o.g.

Arthur was captain's MoM for some adventurous play, and Nicholas was Coaches' MoM for an impressive performance. Everyone should be proud of keeping a clean sheet with some strong defending and goalkeeping.

Friday, 24 October 2008

Sunday 2 Nov away to Ferndale

Hopefully everyone is available.

18th and 19th October Results

Wasps 2 - 2 Ashton Keynes

Smashing goals from Arthur and Jay earned a draw in the friendly v AK. Well done to everyone, especially those playing out of their normal position for a change. Key learning points: players need to be patient in the tackle and not step in, and try to control the ball rather than trying to kick it away first time.

Wasps 2 - 4 Ramsbury

After literally giving away two goals early on, Wasps dug in and played some of their best football of the season against the league leaders. Everyone worked hard and should be proud of the performance today. A good strike from Tom plus perseverance in the goal-mouth from James gave us two deserved goals. The key learning point from this game is to give 100% concentration right from the kick-off. We also learned that we can kill-off the threat from danger players with strong marking and by defending properly.
Captains MoM Samuel: for hard work in midfield, Coaches Mom: James for his first goal and hard work in second half.

Wasps 3 - 1 Cricklade

The boys had a great game against Cricklade today, winning 3-1. More importantly it was an impressive performance, lots of passing, challenging for the ball, tackling and not giving up on the ball. Goals for Johan (Captain's MoM), Arthur and Tom as a result of good passing and perseverance. Excellent goalkeeping and defence (including Coaches MoM George). Everyone made a valuable contribution to our first 3 points of the season - well done.

Sunday, 5 October 2008

Stratton Youth 2 - 2 Wasps

Wasps worked hard today to earn a point. We created lots of chances, defended well and challenged hard in midfield. Well done to Tom (Captain's MoM) for 2 goals and Johan (Coaches MoM). If we can convert all the goal chances into gaols we will win lots of matches like this!

Saturday, 4 October 2008

Ashton Keynes 2 - 7 Wasps

Wasps worked hard and played some great football to beat Ashton Keynes in a friendly. Ewan played well in goal, Tom and Dom were strong in defence. The midfield challenged well for the ball and managed to get some passes going. Nick, Jay and James all took their opportunities to score a goal. Arthur ran well with the ball and used space cleverly to score 4 goals, 2 from outside of the box. Well done!!

Sunday, 28 September 2008

Wasps 0 - 6 Wotton Bassett

Well done to Charlie (Captain's MoM) and Arthur (Coaches MoM) for their performances today. Special mention also to Jonathan in goal. All three showed good determination and challenged for the ball.

We were undone by a 15 minute spell when we went to sleep and let them score 4 quick goals. In a better second half, we only lost one goal.

Sunday Results

CUP: Hungerford 5 -2 Wanborough

This was a not a bad result against a team in the league above us. Well done to Johan for scoring two goals, and to Nick and James playing their first proper matches for the team. Now we can concentrate on the league!

FRIENDLY: Wanborough 1 - 5 Cirencester

Another exciting match against a good team. The 7-man Wanborough team put on a tough display in the heat against an 11-man Cirencester squad.
After losing a couple of easy goals early on, the Wasps drew the second half 1-1 with a goal from JAY and great goalkeeping by Jonathan. Tom S and Will both played their best matches to date.

Reminder: Training Monday from 6.45 pm at Liden.

Wanborough 3 v 3 Ferndale Rodbourne

An exciting match saw Wanborough U10s go ahead with two goals from Tom Head. The first goal was the result of three great passes following a throw-in. The second goal was pure "route one" with Tom on the end of a powerful goal kick from Ewan. A strong start to the second half by Ferndale saw them go ahead to 3-2, before Samuel equalised in the last few minutes.

Good points: some fantastic passing leading to some goals and lots of scoring chances. Everyone was more aggressive and kept going right to the end.

Improvements: midfielders need to make sure they support the defence. We need to attack the ball in the opponents' box at corners.

Captains MoM: Tom H for 2 goals and a couple of near-misses.
Coaches MoM: Charlie for playing superbly at right back (working well with George) and pushing forward at the right times
