For those who are around we will have a training session on Saturday 31st from 2pm - 3.30pm at the Rec. (We thought this was preferable to Sunday morning!)
Please come along for some or all of it as your other commitments permit.
First match of the New Year is away at South Cerney on Sunday 8th at 2pm.
Please let me know if you are not available for any matches (current schedule below). As we have now been joined by Miles and Jack we may have to rest players occasionally, and I would not want to rest anyone unnecessarily if someone else is on holiday etc.

Ciren 4 -2 Wasps
As I said after the match today, it is difficult to complain about today's performance. We held Cirencester for 30 minutes and had created some chances ourselves until the ref awarded an unlucky penalty.
We got back into the game in the second half with a goal from Johan after a one-v-one with the keeper. Johan got another goal after a great run down the wing.
Unfortunately Cirencester got a couple more - a slight loss of concentration from us both times. Their final goal could easily have been disallowed for a foul on Sam, who did well as our stand-in goalie due to Jonny's injured hand.
The defence had a great game - Harry, Jonny, Liam and Will A all worked well at the back. Dom and Will W marked one of their danger players out of the game. Meanwhile we created a lot of good play in midfield, just struggling to get the passes through to create the chances.
The main lesson today is to be more determined to win the 50/50 balls and challenge harder for the clearances. Overall a really good game of football!
Captain's MoM (chosen by Liam): Jonny for a strong defensive display.
Coach's MoM: Nick for a dominant game in midfield (and being muddiest).
Training Monday as normal
Next match: Sunday 27 at HOME to Chiseldon - note this is an AFTERNOON kick off. Meet at 2 for 2.30pm

Wasps 2 - 4 Sevenfields
A game of two halves today.
We were under pressure immediately after letting in two soft goals. The key lesson is we must play with 100% concentration from the outset. We were unlucky to have a goal disallowed (not sure why - but then I wasn't clear what was happening quite a lot of the time today!)
The second half was much better. We were more determined and "won" the second half 2-0 after a penalty for Johan and a goal from Arthur.
It was a difficult match today. We need to keep calm and play our own game of football no matter what the opposition do or say.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Tom): Liam for consistently positive, attacking play
Coaches' MoM: Johan for working hard to create the opportunities.
Training Monday as normal.
Next match: Away at Cirencester meet at 12 for 12.30 kick off.

Greenmeadow 3 - 0 Wasps
Despite the final score there were lots of positives from this game.
We had a strong first half and played the better football. Some good chances were created and some of the passing was fantastic. Unfortunately a last minute goal left us one down at the break.
The second half was more challenging and the defence was heavily tested. Jonny made some good saves and the whole defence worked hard (the main lesson here is that the midfield need to come back and help out more quickly.) A couple of lapses resulted in two goals. But overall an improvement on the last match v Greenmeadow.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Johan): Tom for his midfield creativity
Coaches MoM: Will A for another strong defensive display
Training Monday as usual.
Next Sunday at home to Sevenfields (used to be Penhill Knights), meet at 10 for 10.30 kick off.

Concentrating on the League!
We took the opportunity of a cup match to change a few tactics and play a few players in different positions. Unfortunately, either due to the coaches' tactics or other reasons, we are out of the cup.
We let in a lot of soft goals, mainly due to a lack of marking in and around the box and a failure to clear the ball from danger quickly enough. On the plus side, despite being 6 down, we had a determined 10 minutes where we put some passes together and scored 3 rapid goals.
Well done to Liam for opening the scoring and then getting a second later on after some neat passing. Arthur tapped on in from close range and Nick latched on to a loose ball for the other goals (total 4).
Captain's MoM (chosen by Charlie): Johan for working hard in central midfield and creating some chances
Coaches' MoM: Harry Cole for his best performance since joining us.
Training on Monday as normal.
Half-Term - there are no matches over half term and no training on Monday 24/10.
I would like to organise a fun Futsal session instead and will let you know details.
Could you please let me know if you intend to be at training on 31/10 (or will be "trick or treating"), so I can decide if we have enough players.
Finally, many of the boys have outgrown their shin-pads. Can you pls check their shin-pads actually cover their shins and move up to adult sized ones if necessary.
Next scheduled match is away at Greenmeadow on 6/11 (2pm kick off at Lydiard Park)

Wasps 1 - 5 Greenmeadow
After a promising first half, I thought we stood a chance in the second despite going in 2-0 down. However we didn't really get it together at all in the second half and let Greenmeadow run the game. There were lots of good individual performances and attempts to get some momentum but we didn't gel as a team and ran out of steam by the end. A big learning point is to play to the whistle no matter what else is happening on the pitch. We let in a soft goal because of a distraction on the halfway line. Captain's MoM (chosen by Charlie): Liam for another strong defensive and midfield performance. Liam has quickly established himself as a key member of our team. Coaches' MoM: Jonny - for commanding his box better, being quicker off his line and some impressive saves. Training Monday: 715pm at St Jo's. We have new match kit to give out (Huge thanks to Nick Chevis and First Group for funding a new strip) Next week - we have a cup match away at Shaw 2pm kick off (will confirm in the week)

Wasps 3 -2 Shaw B
A super result today that was well deserved in the sunshine, and moves us up the table. After going a goal behind from an unfortunate defensive (!) header, we worked hard to draw level with a goal from Johan. Shaw took advantage of a bit of weak defence to get a second before half-time. We took great advantage of the slope and the sun in the second half to create lots of chances. Arthur knocked on in from close range and Johan scored again after a lovely through ball from Nick. Tom and Harry both struck the bar. The defence held firm to keep a second half clean sheet.
Good points: creating lots of chances, solid defending second half, and it's good to see the newer players starting to look at home on the pitch
Improvement required: we were very tired by the end - partly the hot weather but also a lack of fitness, we need to challenge for every ball especially from corners/goal kicks.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Johan): Charlie
Coaches' MoM: Nick for defensive midfield work and some nice passing. Special mention to Will Arnold who was unbeatable in his defensive cover role and teaming up nicely with Jonny on difficult through balls.
Training Monday - 7.15 for 7.30 to 8.30 at St Jo's. Our scheduled opponents next week have a cup match, but we have altered another fixture to get some games in while the weather is nice. So, Sunday 9 October - home v Greenmeadow - 10.00am meet for 10.30 kick off As always pls let me know if you can't make it.

Avondale 4 - 4 Wasps
A well deserved point today. We fought hard all match and scored some great goals in an exciting game. We had no substitutes against Avondale's squad of 16 and it was a very big pitch!
After a scoreless 15 minutes, Avondale went ahead, only for Johan to score direct from the restart (4 touches from the whistle to the back of the net!)
We lead briefly after another 2 goals from Johan both as a result of some good passing from midfield. Score: 3-3 at half time.
Johan pounced again to get goal #4 after the break. Unfortunately Avondale scored again to draw level at 4-4. Despite a nervous last 10 minutes with chances at both ends and a very tired Wanborough team, it finished at 4-4.
Good points - 100% effort from everybody. Some fantastic "route 1" balls. Midfield passing and tackling.
Improvement needed - marking was slack at times and defence needs to be more assertive and not let the ball bounce around in the box.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Jonny) - Johan (4 goals - enough said!)
Coaches MoM - jointly awarded to - Liam for running his socks off in midfield, tackling and passing well. Dom for making his most valuable contribution for a long time - tackling, clearing and concentrating all match.
Training tomorrow: 6.30 - 7.30 at the Rec (with a few celebratory sweets for getting a point)
Thanks for the £2 from most of you.
Next week we are due to be at home to (bottom of the table) Shaw - 10.30 kick off.

Wasps 1 - 5 Highworth and Sunday 25/9
Not a long match report this week as I wasn't at the match, but well done to Arthur for his goal and Jonny for Captain's MoM (awarded by Charlie).
It was good to hear that we had a stronger second half despite only just having 11 players. Thanks to Ray for acting as linesman even though Dom was unwell.
Training: as the light is fading we will finish training at 7.30 next week and will move to St Jo's in next few weeks (will confirm exact date later)
Match on Sunday is away at Avondale (nr Tetbury) - 1.30 for 2pm kick off.
We may be struggling for a team. I think we have the following - can you please confirm if listed as UNSURE so we can either postpone (probably means conceding the match) or draft in some U12s. Please do ask if transport is a problem (we can always arrange lifts).

Stratton Youth 4 - 2 Wasps
Another one that got away!
The first half was well contested by both teams and the 1-1 scoreline (break-away goal from Johan) was fair, although we rather gifted them the goal. There was some great defending, especially from Harry F and Nick, and some good chances made up front.
We took the lead in the second half with a calmly taken goal by Arthur. Unfortunately a disallowed goal at one end and a mix-up with a goal kick at the other end meant Stratton got back into the game, and took the momentum to go ahead and score again. Final result 4-2.
Good points - we are playing some good passing football and creating chances. Liam had a very good first game. No foul throws!
Improvement needed - marking can be sloppy at times, and we need to tighten up at the back and ensure danger is cleared more quickly.
Captain's MoM - chosen by Tom - Charlie for solid defending
Coaches' MoM - Harry F for a superb defensive effort and for taking lots of throw-ins with no fouls.
Next match - at home to Highworth (meet at the Rec at 10am for 10.30 kick off). I am not around, so please offer to help PerAxel if you can (setting up pitch, linesman etc). Please let me know if you are not available.
Training - Monday 6.30 - 8pm at the Rec - Helen will distribute new training tops and jackets.
Biscuit fund: can everyone please let me/Helen have £2 to ensure a steady supply of biscuits/Celebrations chocolates over the season.
New match kit is on order - huge thanks to Nick Chevis and First Group for their continued sponsorship - it will be a few weeks before we get it.

Wasps 4 -7 South Cerney
An encouraging start to the season, despite the result. We played some good football and made lots of chances - if we continue to do this and can blow away the cobwebs then we will do well this season.
After we let in a couple of goals it was great to see the determination in getting a couple of goals back. Unfortunately a bit of bad luck, a disallowed goal and 10 minutes lack of concentration meant we lost a match we could have won.
Well done to Johan (2), Tom and Arthur for scoring some excellent goals.
Good points: Creating lots of chances, encouraging start for Harry C and Ty
Improvement required: Throw-ins (no excuse for foul throws!), tackling, taking our chances with the goal opportunities
Captain's MoM (chosen by Arthur): Ty for a good first game including a goalmouth clearance
Coaches' MoM: Arthur the most determined effort, including providing a wonderful assist for Johan and a calmly taken goal.

New Kit
We are just about to start registration for next season (you don't have to do anything as last year's registration will simply roll over unless you have told me otherwise).
New training kit will be ordered shortly, can you please let me know ASAP:
- what size your son is now (height, chest size, normal clothing size, small boy/med boy/large boy/S/M/L/XL etc)
- your squad number
- if you don't think the current match kit will fit next year so we can decide if we need to order a new one.
If you have any old kit (from past seasons) that no longer fits please return it to us so we can pass down to younger teams (or the club is looking at donating to children in developing countries).

END OF SEASON ARRANGEMENTS
Please see separate email with details of the AGM on 26th June and RVSP.
We have yet to take a 2010/11 team photo - so will do this at the next training session.
Please let me know your vote for Player of the Season.
As mentioned earlier in the year, we need to try to plan for 2011/12. If you are a definite YES or NO please let me know. If you want to discuss anything please give me/PerAxel/Jon Raymond or one of the parent reps a call. If you know any boys who fancy playing for Wanborough please ask them to get in touch.

Wasps 3 - 0 Shaw
A marvellous end to the season. When we get 100% from everyone like today we always play well and we deserved this result. We made lots of chances and threatened to score quite a few times. Tom scored first, Johan got another and then Charlie finished off a passing move he started at the halfway line to thump in from the 6-yd box.
We jump ahead of Shaw and Croft and are now 9th in the league (although Croft and Shaw both have a match to play - so we may drop off a little - but we will not be bottom!)
Many good performances today:
Congratulations to Jonny and his defence for keeping a clean sheet.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Tom): Charlie for midfield work and passing (and his goal)
Coaches MoM: James for what was probably his most effective play in a Wanborough shirt!
Congratulations to Johan - his 25th goal today moves him into 3rd pace in the league goal scorers list (second if we ignore the cup matches) - he gets our Golden Boot award. Arthur's 15 is a great total also.
No training Monday - we will give the boys a deserved rest this week. We will have a couple more sessions before the end of the season (check for emails).

Wasps 0 - 7 Avondale
We had a depleted squad today, with only 11 boys available. The first half was close - 2-0 down playing uphill and into the wind, but we had created a few good chances. After a promising start to the second half, unfortunately we had an injury to Arthur, so we played most of the second half with 10 men.
It was always going to be a struggle and a few players stepped up and put in the extra effort to make up for being a man down. However, Avondale took advantage of tired legs and the extra space to score more goals.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Jonny): Tom for some great midfield play and putting in the extra effort in 2nd half.
Coaches' MoM: Johan for 100% effort and also stepping up a gear when down to 10 men.

Wasps 4 - 1 Chiseldon
A great all-round performance today against a good Chiseldon team who didn't give up easily.
Johan started the scoring with a goal from outside the box. Arthur got the goal that he has been threatening for a while. In the second half Johan scored another after latching on to a loose ball. Finally Nick killed the game off with a huge goal from nearly at the half way line! Despite a few scares we only let in one goal.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Sam): Jonny for confident goal keeping (and being consistently good over recent games)
Coaches' MoM: Nick for his relentless movement and play in midfield (and deserved goal)
We are now 3 points off the bottom. A couple more strong performances and three/six points could take us up to 8th place. Equally we could still end up bottom if we don't keep playing right to the end of the season next week.
Next match is at HOME on Sunday vs Avondale, meet at 9.30 for 10am k.o.

This was definitely the toughest match of the season. We don't often play against such physical players who know how to use their bodies (and arms and legs and....)
The first half result was not bad - letting in 3 (downhill) against a team who constantly target such a tall, strong centre forward.
In the second half, we got the measure of them and killed their only game-plan. Solid defending and midfield play plus some good passing and running upfront meant we created more chances - including a goal for Johan and Arthur hitting the bar. So 1-0 to us in the second half - a good result.
The main learning point is to make sure we can respond to physical football (with more skilful football). We also need to make more space rather than getting trapped on the sidelines.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Tom): Sam for determined defending against their centre forward
Coaches' MoM: Arthur for being much more aware of the offside and continuing to create goal scoring chances
No matches over Easter. Local derby coming up against Chiseldon!

Stratton Yth 5 - 3 Wasps
A real curate's egg today.
At times, we played really well. The boys have really improved and are frequently playing some good mature football. Our set pieces are working well. Jonny's goal kicks are getting longer, Johan's corners are excellent, we are using more of the pitch and we are making lots of chances.
However, we let ourselves down at times today and Stratton took advantage. We need to challenge for every ball especially around the box. No-one should be turning their backs on the ball or swinging legs aimlessly. We have shown in recent matches that we are better than that.
It was tough match today. Stratton were always going to work hard after Wed's result and with no substitutes we tired more quickly on a big pitch.
On the positive side, we created some good chances and Tom was unlucky to have his goal ruled offside. Johan's opening goal was the result of determination and Charlie deserved to get a goal, knocking in Johan's corner. We tried hard to get back into the match in the last 15 minutes.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Nick): Tom for his midfield passing and (disallowed) goal
Coaches' MoM: Charlie - gave 100% today and scored a goal
No training tomorrow - instead we have Highworth Town at home - meet at 6 for 6.30 k.o.

Wasps 7 - 1 Stratton Youth
A wonderful result for our first evening kick off. Not much to say but well done to everyone - well deserved.
Johan scored 5, including 2 from very tight angles (now in the top 5 scorers in the league). George scored his first of the season, volleying in from a corner - a move straight from the training ground! Nick also scored his first goal with a lovely shot into the corner with the aid of a slight deflection.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Johan): Nick for his midfield work and goal
Coaches' MoM: Johan for scoring 5 goals and also for continuing to pass and work hard the whole time.
Stratton Youth again on Sunday - 10am meet for 10.30 kick off at Baunton Lane, Cirencester (it will be a tougher match!) (missing Sam and George - please let us know if you are not available!)

Penhill 4 - 2 Wasps
The word that sums up this match is probably "frustrating".
After going ahead twice (both goals from Johan) we let Penhill come back an take the lead. We were often too slow in marking and didn't challenging for the ball enough. We never really settled down into our own game - sometimes we need to prepared to play a more aggressive game.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Arthur): Johan for two goals and good runs
Coaches' MoM: Ewan for his best performance this season filling in in midfield.
Training at St Jo's tomorrow (last time - back to the Rec after Easter).
We have two matches vs bottom of the table Stratton Youth (home on Weds and away on Sunday), then a match on Monday instead of training - please let us know if you have any problem with these matches.

Wasps 0 - 3 Greenmeadow
Another good performance today despite the final scoreline. We defended well in the first half before Greenmeadow scored and had several good chances ourselves. Their second goal was unfortunate after a super goal-line clearance by Will/Harry. In the second half we created some more good chances but lost another goal on the break.
Overall, we did well against the top scoring team in the division. It's nice to see some good passing (even if it doesn't always work).
After a couple of weeks where everyone gave 100% for the whole match, we didn't have quite the same level of effort this week and it does make a difference to the overall performance of the team.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Charlie): Arthur for his non-stop running upfront (and some near-misses!)
Coaches MoM: James for his best performance this year against a couple of tricky wingers.
Please keep an eye on the fixture list. Starting next Sunday, we have 5 matches in 9 days before Easter! If you can't make any of these let us know ASAP. If you need lifts please email us to sort something out.
I will send out a invitation using Teamer for each match.
Training Monday at St Jo's as normal.

Teamer
On behalf of the club, we are trying out a new service to manage the team. It's called Teamer.net and will enable us to send out text message reminders about matches etc.
You may receive a text or email invitation from Teamer. If so, please follow the instructions and see what happens!
We'd be grateful for any feedback (+/-) before we look at recommending it (or not) to the other teams

Chiseldon 3 - 3 Wasps
This hotly contested local derby ended in a draw. We pulled ahead 3 times - a great individual goal from Johan, a thumping shot from Charlie and another from Johan. But each time Chiseldon pulled one back. Conceding the goals was disappointing as we made basic errors for each one. A wide pitch with a very bumpy surface made it difficult also.
The good news is we move off the bottom of the table!
We need to keep our shape a bit better and continue to mark, especially when the other team change their shape.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Johan): Charlie for solid defending and a thumping goal from distance
Coaches' MoM: Arthur - for a couple a near misses and covering the most ground of any other player!
Next match: Sunday 20th at home to Greenmeadow.

Wasps 6 - 4 Calne
We had a great result today against previously undefeated Calne.
After letting in an early goal, we played some fantastic football in the first half. Strong defending and some lovely passing in midfield and between attackers created lots of chances. Well done to Johan for getting a hat-trick and Arthur for netting two. 5-1 at half time.
The second half required a different type of football. We defended and absorbed the pressure for 15 minutes before finally Calne scored a couple of goals. A nervous final 5 minutes saw Calne get within one goal of levelling the match. But we caught Calne on the break a couple of times eventually winning a free-kick which resulted in Tom scoring a lovely goal from distance to secure the win.
Well done to everyone today. Everyone gave 100% effort for the whole match.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Will A): Johan for the hat-trick and then defending in second half
Coaches' MoM: Tom Head for some lovely weighted passes to set up the goals, and his final goal.
The main learning point is to make sure we close down and not allow shots from around the edge of the 18-yard box as increasingly this is where goals are coming from.
Training as normal Monday (from 7.15pm)

Wasps 4 - 6 Brinkworth
It was great to see the attitude shown at Highworth carried forward into this match. In the first half we played excellent football and created lots of chances. Arthur scored the first, and Johan scored from a free-kick from outside the box for the second. Half time, 2-nil up against the undefeated league leaders - great performance all round.
Unfortunately we were a bit wayward at the start of the second half and let Brinkworth back in with two goals. Brinkworth made the most of the slope and the wind, but we battled equally hard. Another goal from Arthur and and tap-in from Harry after a good run from Johan left the final result at 4-6.
Despite the loss we can be very pleased with the game today - a clear lead at half time and continuing to score when we were a couple of goals down. Brinkworth have kept 7 clean sheets this season, yet we scored more goals against them than any other team in the league - fantastic!
Captain's MoM (chosen by Charlie) - Will A for excellent defensive work at full-back (again)
Coaches' MoM - Dominic for a superb first half in defence and his best game this season.
Training Monday (at the later time)
No training or matches over half-term. Next match is at home to Calne on 6/3

Highworth 2 - 2 Wasps
This was great result against one of the top teams in the league. For the first time this season everyone gave 100% for the whole match. We certainly deserved the draw and even had a couple of chances to win in the last few minutes.
Highworth had to work hard for their first goal and were lucky to get a second after a brave save by Jonny. Johan won a penalty and coolly converted it to go in 2-1 down at half time.
We made the most of the slope in the second half and forced an o.g. to tie the match.
We could have scored a few more - we hit the bar twice!
This shows we are a good team when we work hard and play football. Defence tackled well, midfield held the ball up and released it to runners, forwards created chances. All excellent football.
Apparenty we do well when we save the biscuits to full-time - perhaps we'll keep that superstition going!
Captain's MoM (chosed by Harry) - Charlie for midfield work and a header against the bar!
Coaches' MoM - Will W for his best match of the season with some fierce defending.
Next week - we need the same again against the league leaders - at home to Brinkworth

Sunday 6/2 and new training time
Sunday 6/2 - Away at Highworth
We are due to be away at Highworth (Elms Rec), meet at 11.30 for 12.00 kick off. Please dress warmly (esp gloves) if cold.
Training - change of time 7.15 - 8.30pm
From next week until the end of March, the pitch is booked at St Jo's from 7.30 - 8.30pm, meeting at 7.15 for warm up.
Despite the best efforts of our sponsor(!), we may still need someone to help at short notice if trains are delayed - please let me know if you are happy to be called upon!
I hope this doesn't cause anyone any problems, if it does please let me know - we could revert to the old time but would need some one to commit to be there every week as the extra adult.

Croft 5 - 1 Wasps
This was another of those matches where anyone watching the game would wonder "how did the scoreline end up like that?!"
We had the best of the play in the first half and could have been 2 or 3 goals ahead. Unfortunately Croft had 2 chances and took them both to lead at H-T.
A weak start to the second half left us 4-0 down. We worked hardest in the last 15 minutes and looked liked scoring several times and Sam did latch on to a loose ball to score.
Overall, some we played excellent football but just didn't get the goals despite having chances.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Sam) - Harry for his play on the wing in the first half.
Coach's MoM - Sam for spirited and effective work in midfield and first goal of the season.
If we had a "team of the match" award it would go to the back 4 of Will A, Benj, Nick and Ewan supported by Jonny, who defended incredibly well in the first half and allowed very few chances to Croft.
Training as usual Monday.
Next week - at home vs Avondale meet at 9.30 for 10.00 kick off.

Shaw 9 - 4 Wasps
Other than the last 10 minutes, when we showed a bit of spirit and scored 3 goals, there weren't too many positives today. We were undone in the first half - a mixture of unfavourable wind, sloppy marking and low levels of effort, even after going 1-0 ahead.
Well done to Johan (1) and Arthur (2 + pen) for grabbing some goals today.
Captain's MoM (chosen by Tom) - Sam for determined midfield play
Coaches' MoM - Will A for some adventurous play and showing most spirit.
Training as normal Monday.

Now concentrating on the League
This was a really encouraging start to the New Year. For the first 20 minutes and for a spell in the 2nd half we played some great football - passing, holding up the ball, challenging for the ball. We created some super chances. As Arthur got on the end of Johan's cross for the first goal it looked like Cup upset might be on the cards. A bit of neat passing opened up Tom for an impressive goal in the second half.
Unfortunately we had had a couple of spells before that where we let in too many goals (final score 2-10) - we seem to always have 5 minutes where we let the other team score at will!
If we can play for 60 minutes like we played for the first 20, we will be a hard team to beat in the League. It was nice to see us trying to play some intelligent football.
Lots of good performances today:
Captain's MoM (chosen by Arthur): Tom for passing out of midfield and scoring.
Coaches' MoM: George for an effective man marking task.
