Highworth 3 - 4 Wasps. The Miracle of Highworth

In 2005, there was the Miracle of Istanbul - Liverpool coming back from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan. Liverpool had to go to penalties to win the Champions League. Today we went one better in the Miracle of Highworth. From 3-0 down, we came back to win 4-3. A wonderful second half performance and a well deserved win.

We didn't play our best in the first half. Not enough challenging for the ball, slack marking. We let Highworth play around us too easily. They scored three straightforward goals.

At half time, a Rafa Benitez team talk and it was a different team in the second half. Johan opened the scoring with a free-kick which fooled the goalie and dropped in at the far post. He then delivered a corner for Charlie to head in and a cross for Charlie to get a second. 3-all with 10 minutes left. Finally, some fantastic work from Harry to deliver a cross in for Johan to get the winner.

Meanwhile defence and midfield were strong and worked hard to keep Highworth out. Some excellent clearances, tackling and goalkeeping.

Overall a great result which puts some distance between us and the bottom of the table. All credit to the boys for some great football and sporting character.

MoM: Johan for getting hold of the match and being the change that was needed, plus he had a hand in all 4 goals.

Training tomorrow as normal.

No matches over Xmas - next match in the New Year is at home on 6/1 (vs league leaders Chippenham)

Wasps 2 - 2 South Cerney

Cracking game today resulting in a well deserved point.

In the first half we played very well - some excellent defending, good passing from midfield and we created a lot of chances. The goal eventually came from a corner, Arthur delivering into the box for Johan to head in. Unfortunately a 5 minute spell when we were a bit sloppy with marking let South Cerney get a goal back.

We carried on playing well in the second half, but did start to allow Cerney too much room in midfield and they took advantage to go ahead. However, we carried on working hard - possibly the best we have ever played uphill in a second half. After a couple of close chances, a route one goal from Jonny to Arthur to Johan levelled up the game.

Some great performances today with many MoM contenders. Well done to Johan for getting 2 goals and Arthur for 2 assists. Lucas had his best game yet and Marcus played well in his first game for us. Apart from a couple of weak moments, the defence was very strong.

MoM: Sam for an impressive display in midfield, especially influential in the first half. Excellent tackling and distribution of the ball.

Training - we will train as normal tomorrow and Monday 17th before breaking for Xmas.

Final match before Xmas is away at Highworth on Sunday 16/12 afternoon (2pm) kick off

Brinkworth 1 - 0 Wasps

A very tight match today. The only difference between the two teams was a header from a corner.

The good news is that this was a huge improvement from last week. Much more energy and concentration. Most players worked hard and tried to play good football. We struggled a little against a couple of bigger players from Brinkworth and we still need to make more positive passes and ensure more passes reach the intended recipient (and that all passes have an intended recipient!)

MoM - Jonny for some brave saves today diving at feet and a huge improvement in height and length of his goal kicks.

Training Monday at St Jo's as normal

Next match - Sunday 25th at home. 10 for 10.30 kick off. We get the chance to get our own straight back v Brinkworth.

Sunday, 11 November 2012

Wasps 1 - 6 Avonvale

Positive things today: most of the first half

We played well in the first half. We made chances, worked hard in defence and tried to play passing football. The main lesson is to play to the whistle - don't stop if it looks like a foul or handball - let the ref decide.

Negative things today: most of the second half

The half time team talk didn't work today. The 10 players of Avonvale worked much harder than us. We allowed them to pass the ball too easily, in particular through to the centre forward who scored a hat-full of identical goals. Too often Wanborough players stood watching  as Avonvale sped past them to score. We rarely controlled the ball first time and gave the ball away too easily. Overall, very disappointing.

We did make a few chances and well done to Miles for snatching a goal following Johan's cross in. Special mention to Sam who had a good game trying to distribute the ball from midfield.

MoM - Harry for working hard from defence on the right wing.

Training tomorrow as usual.

Next match is away v Brinkworth Cats at Ballards Ash Wootton Bassett. Afternoon kick-off - meet at 1.30 for 2pm.

Half term training/next match

Training Monday 22/10 at St Jo's as normal

No matches or training over half term.

Training
resumes Monday 5/11 at St Jo's

Next match is Sunday 11/11 at HOME 10 for 10.30 kick off.

Shaw 6 - 2 Wasps

A disappointing first half today. We didn't really turn up for the first 20 minutes. To give Shaw credit - they played well and took advantage of generally weak marking and defending from Wanborough.

We showed some spirit to get a couple of goals - Sam played an excellent dummy (!) allowing James to score and shortly afterwards Charlie scored from distance (with a bit of help from the goalie).

The second half was a big improvement - other than a dodgy penalty, we held Shaw and threatened ourselves a few times. But the margin was always going to be too great to recover.

MoM - Harry - for being the most aggressive player and some daring runs from defence.

Please see separate post about training and next match

Wasps 7 - 3 Sevenfields

Well done to all the boys today - a great game, some excellent football and a superb 3 points.

On a very soft pitch, we let in an early goal on the break, but quickly recovered with Arthur scoring from an impossible angle.

Tye scored 2 from close range. One of these was the goal of the match - starting with a pass from  Lucas to Arthur to Johan who laid off to Tye to slot in. From the half-way line to the back of the net in a few simple passes. Excellent football!

In the second half, Johan played superbly to score three and covered a variety of other positions as we shuffled round to cover for injury and tiredness. The goal tally was completed by Harry who collected wide on the right before putting an unstoppable shot over the keeper.

It was really good to see us dig in and defend our lead. Sevenfields challenged hard to get back into the game, snatching a couple of goals (including putting Jonny in the back of the net at one point!). We do need to be careful of leaving holes at the back - even when winning.

Coaches' MoM - Johan for his hat-trick and all-round play.

In all the excitement I forgot to hand out biscuits! We will have celebratory sweets at training.

Concentrating on the league

A really tough game today against the top team in division 1.

With the squad a bit depleted - Jonny was out with a bad back (thanks to Arthur for stepping in), Miles has a broken foot, Sam is struggling with injury - it was always going to be hard. Jack from the U13s helped us out again making the team up to 11.

We worked incredibly hard in the first half to contain Purton and held them to just two goals. Unfortunately a big difference in fitness and squad depth meant they took hold in the second half and scored a few more, particularly near the end.

The scoreline is not important. The key thing is to learn from the match:
- we played well in the first half - defending and marking well
- Purton's passing and movement was highly impressive - we need to play more like this
- we were rarely first to the ball from clearances/goal kicks - we must challenge harder for the ball
- when we tired our marking became sloppy and we left big holes for them to score too easily

Please encourage the boys to think about the lessons we learnt today and think how to improve their own game, rather than dwell on the scoreline. If we can take the lessons from today into the league it will really help us.

Well done to the defence who had to work hardest today. Jack had a great game and was determined to play good football. Will received man of the match for some excellent defending against some quality players.

Training tomorrow from 7.15 at the St Jo's.

Next Sunday we are due to be at home to Sevenfields 10am for 10.30 kick off

Monday, 24 September 2012

South Cerney 4 - 1 Wasps

A disappointing result yesterday, but it sounds like the scoreline doesn't really tell the whole story. A few mistakes costs us some cheap goals, but otherwise we had a decent match in some lousy weather.

Well done to Tye for getting MoM for determinedly challenging for every ball.

Thanks to Per-Axel for managing again and to Ray for running the line.

Training tonight from 6.15 to 7.30pm at the Rec.

Next week's match is at HOME to Highworth (10 for 10.30 kick off)

CUP: Sevenfields 3 - 4 Wanborough

Congratulations for a good win in the cup today. We had a good cup run last year - but they were all byes so it is nice to progress on merit. Perhaps we'll do some giant-killing in the next round!

Thanks very much to Joe and Jack (U13s) for helping out today and playing really well. It sounds like a good but tough match. Well done to Charlie, Joe, Miles and Tye for getting a goal each.

Man of the match: Charlie - for a goal and for taking on the game after 20 minutes, holding the team together and turning it around for Wanborough.
Special mention for Nick who by all accounts had a great match.

Please keep an eye on the fixtures online http://full-time.thefa.com/ListPublicFixture.do?divisionseason=145693673&league=8577245
as a few times have changed, Malborough have dropped out and our cup win will result in a change or two.

Training Monday 6.15pm - 7.30pm at the Rec

Next Sunday - due to be away at South Cerney. 10am for 10.30

Sunday, 9 September 2012

Wasps 1 - 1 Stratton Youth

A great game to start the season. Well done to everyone today for working hard in the hot sunshine and getting a point on the board.

The result is encouraging and we could have won it - we came close several times including Charlie hitting the bar. More importantly we played some excellent football - defending was strong, midfield were creative and caused no end of problems for Stratton and the forwards created chances and chased down balls.

We were unlucky to concede 1 minute before half time having kept the opposition at bay for 35 minutes. We certainly deserved the equaliser from Johan.

Among many super performances today, coaches' MoM was Arthur, who worked hard despite getting a knock and showed a good temperament in some challenging conditions.

As indicated last season, we intend to appoint a "permanent" Captain (rather than change it every week). The first Captain will take the position until Christmas. Then we will either revert to the rotation system or appoint a new Captain for the remainder of the season. We will appoint the Captain and tell the boys in the next couple of weeks.

As mentioned, we are low on numbers so need your continued support to turn out every week regardless - thank you to the two players who played today despite carrying injuries.

Training Monday 6.30 - 7.30pm. Match Sunday 16th Cup match away at Sevenfields (Meadowcroft) 10 for 10.30 k.o.

Saturday, 8 September 2012

First match

We had a good match tonight. A very nice start to the season against a very good U13s squad. Well done to everyone. Goals from Dom, Arthur and Johan. Some great defending and creative midfield play. As I mentioned to the boys we have a definite squad of 13 regulars and a couple of possible players. This means we need everyone every week (we already have one on the injured list!). If you can't make a match please give me as much notice as possible so we can ask an U13 to play if necessary. If you know anyone else who might like to play for us please ask them to call/email me/Helen - no obligation! I have had a few kit requests - let me know if you need anything else and I will try to sort it out. Match Sunday - at home to Stratton Youth - meet at the Rec at 10am for 10.30 kick off Training Monday is at the Rec from 6.30 - 7.30pm

Wasps 3 - 4 Stratton Yth

A tough competitive match today. Story of the season in that we played some good football, scored some good goals, but let in a couple of weak goals which ultimately left us without any points.

A goal-line "save" by Tom led to a penalty for Stratton which Jonny was unlucky not to keep out. Charlie took advantage of the keeper coming off his line to score two well-aimed long-distance goals. Unfortunately we failed to clear a long ball leading to another Stratton goal. 2-2 at half time.

We went off the boil for a while in the second half, conceding two more goals, before finishing strongly with a calmly-taken goal from Tom. We did well to keep our tempers with some strong challenges flying in from our opponents. Well done to everyone today for working hard. Some very good football played at times and some excellent defending.

Captain's MoM (chosen by Lewis): Charlie for dominating in midfield and two great goals
Coach's MoM: Will Witts for determined defending.

Next, and final match, is AWAY at Shaw on Sunday 29/4 2pm kick off. A win will guarantee we finish off the bottom of the table. (Is anyone not available?)

Training Monday 7pm - 8pmat the Rec (we will try to play until 8.15 but likely to be defeated by the light, so please be prepared to pick up at 8pm)

Sunday, 18 March 2012

Sevenfields 1 - 3 Wasps

To use a cliché, it was a game of 2 halves today. Fortunately it was played in a much more pleasant environment than last time.

It seemed most of the boys weren't interested in the first half. We were rarely first to the ball, put in lazy challenges and were forced to defend for 30 minutes. We let in one goal as a result of a series of mistakes. The positive aspect is that we were able to defend and defend for an extended period.

The half-time talk must have been inspirational (!) as the second half was very different. Everyone worked hard. Challenges were firm and quick and we played higher up the pitch. Defending was solid when we needed it from all the defence, in particular from Liam and Will. Arthur brought us level and then Johan hit two (among a couple of strikes against the woodwork).

Captain's MoM (chosen by Jack): Johan for his goals and attempts on goals.
Coaches' MoM: Will Arnold for his covering defensive work and never letting-up.

Training tomorrow at St Jo's as normal (7.15pm to 8.30pm). Part of football is learning to look after your kit. Extra sweets on offer for anyone who shows us a clean pair of boots (no sweets if cleaned by Mum!). PX has warned he may refuse to play anyone who turns up with muddy boots!

No match next week (Swindon at Wembley).

Last few matches (please let me know if you are unavailable):

01/04/12 10:30 Wootton Bassett Town @ Ballards Ash Pitch 1
15/04/12 10:30 Home vs Stratton Youth
29/04/12 14:00 Shaw B @ Chestnut Springs 5

We should be aiming for 7 - 9 more points from these games!

Sunday, 11 March 2012

Wasps 6 - 1 WB

A great result today and well deserved.

We pressured from the start and Ty grabbed a goal after just 1 minute. We made loads of chances after that - Johan made the most of lots of open space to shoot and cross regularly. Jack converted two of the crosses to score two headed goals. After the break we continued to create chances. Sam picked up a loose ball to score from close range and Tom got a deserved goal (after having a one disallowed just before). We were unlucky to concede a goal from one of WB's few breaks.

Goals: Ty, Jack (2), Johan, Sam, Tom
Captain's MoM (chosen by Ty): Jack - for two headed goals
Coaches' MoM: Charlie for dominating midfield in the first half and Johan for his open play and crosses.

We play WB again soon. We have four matches left against lower-table teams and we should be aiming to get at least 7 to 9 points to pull us from the bottom of the table for the end of the season.

Training Monday as normal

Next Sunday (18th) we are AWAY at Sevenfields (Meadowcroft: Addison Crescent , Upper Stratton, Swindon SN2 7J)- is anyone unavailable??

Sunday, 26 February 2012

Wasps 1 - 5 Ciren

A lovely day for a football match today, unfortunately not such a lovely result.

The big learning point was from the 4 basic errors that led directly to 4 of the 5 opposition's goals:
- we cannot leave balls to bounce around in the box and assume the opposition won't try to score (twice!)
- the opposition will shoot from the edge of the box if we don't get a player in front of them
- a miss-kicked clearance is like a free pass to the opposition in the box

That said, there was also some great defending today against a strong Cirencester forward line. It was great to see some of the training tactics, such as throw-ins to feet, being shown in the match. We made lots of chances (esp in the first half) and there were spells in both halfs when we were the stronger team.

Well done to Tyrome for getting his first goal of the season.

Captain's MoM (chosen by Tom): Ty for his goal and energy chasing down balls upfront
Coaches' MoM: Lewis for an excellent battling performance in his first game for us

Training as normal Monday at St Jos.
Next week we re-start our winning streak away at Shaw B (Chestnut Springs) meet at 1.30pm for 2pm kick off (no Harry C, Harry F)

Sunday, 29 January 2012

Wasps 3 - 2 Avondale

Great result today. We carried on playing like we did at Highworth and got the reward for it.

Arthur grabbed the first after we had several chances from Johan's corners - Charlie's headers coming close a couple of times. Tom got the second after good passing on the right wing.

We let in one goal on the break and another in the second half when we let Avondale have a free shot from just outside the box. However, we carried on creating chances and Sam poked home the winner from another good corner.

It was fantastic to see us continuing to press forward and defend well for the last 10 minutes to secure the win.

Captain's MoM (chosen by Miles, who gave a super Captain's performance): Sam for his play on the left and first goal of the season
Coaches MoM: Tom for midfield play resulting in a deserved goal and solid defensive role in the second half.

Training Monday as usual (weather permitting - please make sure PX or I are on-site before dropping off your boys, else they are unsupervised until we get there)
Next match: Sunday 5th away at Shaw meet at 1.30 for 2pm kick off (at Chestnut Springs)

Sunday, 22 January 2012

Highworth 3 - 1 Wasps

A disappointing scoreline, but not a disappointing performance today against the league leaders. We battled hard for the whole game, played some good passing football and made chances against a tough physical team.

Some points to think about:
- if we don't clear the ball quickly from the box we often suffer for it (like the second goal today)
- midfield needs to get back quickly if an attack breaks down (we were caught on the break for the 3rd goal)
- no matter how rough it gets or if decisions go against you, never retaliate and keep your mouth shut - or you will get into trouble
- passing often needs to be much firmer and more positive

Some noteworthy performances from lots of players, including:
- Harry F and Charlie for eliminating the threat from their danger players
- Will A and Nick for good defending and Will W in the second half
- James for his first goal of the season

Captain's MoM (chosen by Jack): Liam for his aggressive midfield play
Coach's MoM: Miles for some great, confident defending and repeatedly feeding the ball forward

Next match: at home on 29/1 to Avondale, 10.30 kick off - please let me know if you are not available
Training on Monday as usual.

Sunday, 8 January 2012

South Cerney 3 - 1 Wasps

Not the result we wanted today. A disappointing second half against 10-man South Cerney let us down.

We started well. The first half was promising - lots of good passing, which we have been practising in training. We made a few good chances and defended well especially when we gave away a couple of free-kicks around the box. Nil-nil at half time looked promising, especially if Cerney started to tire.

Unfortunately it was us who tired more quickly in the second half. A couple of lapses of concentration and some lazy marking and suddenly we are 3-0 down against 10 men. We looked threatening when we did show some energy and determination - Jack's brave header pulled back a goal for us.

We are a better team than our league table position suggests - but we need to start proving it for a whole match, and do it week in and week out.

Well done to Miles and Jack who both played well in their first game for us, and thanks to Nick for refereeing.

Captain's MoM (chosen by Arthur): Jack for his goal and very effective first game
Coaches' MoM: Sam for excellent passing and creative play in left midfield, especially in first half

Training: as normal Monday 7.15 - 8.30 at St Jo's - we will concentrate on running off the mince pies :-)
Next match: Sunday 15th at home to Stratton Youth (a six-pointer) meet at 10am for 10.30 kick off. As we now have more registered players than we can take to each match can you let me know if you can/can't make it.
